Huck Institutes Seeks Director of Graduate Training Initiatives

The Huck Institutes of the Life Sciences is searching for a Penn State faculty member interested in overseeing a number of training programs for master's and doctoral students.

The Huck Institutes of the Life Sciences is seeking an innovative Penn State faculty member with a strong background in interdisciplinary life sciences research and a passion for teaching and mentoring graduate students to join our Huck leadership team. The successful applicant will work as part of team-Huck in support of the six Intercollege Graduate Degree Programs (IGDPs) and our growing portfolio of life science graduate training grants (currently 5). Time commitment is anticipated to be 30 - 50% (negotiable) that will be compensated with any combination of supplemental salary, research support funds, and teaching or service buyout.

Director of Graduate Training Initiatives

Working with graduate training program PI and faculty, assist in the delivery of existing pre-doctoral graduate training programs (NIH T32 etc.) and support initiation, development, and submission of new training grant proposals as appropriate. Meet periodically with training fellows and evaluate program outcomes and assist training faculty mentors in implementing program features and best mentoring practices. Work with PI and training faculty to coordinate recruiting and evaluation of training fellow applications. Serve as an interface with the Strategic Interdisciplinary Research Office in the office of the Vice President for Research and other university units for training program and award management, annual reports, and renewals. Develop and support innovative activities in our 6 intercollege graduate degree programs to enrich training and professional skills of graduate students, including leading efforts to deliver a pre-doctoral fellowship preparation course. This position will work as part of a team with the Associate Director for Graduate Education, the Director of Graduate Programs, and an Assistant Director of Training Grant Administration, all in the Huck Institutes of the Life Sciences. A PhD in life sciences or related disciplines, and a record of excellence in mentoring graduate students is required. Prior participation or leadership in training grants preferred, but not required. Initial appointment will be for 2 years and is renewable.
