The mourning dove (Zenaida macroura) is an ecologically important bird species in North America that has significant recreation value. Since the 1960s, mourning dove populations have been declining in western and central U.S. states but have been increasing in eastern states. These trends have occurred concurrently with large-scale shifts in agricultural practices and urbanization. We characterize large-scale patterns in annual recruitment across the species range and examine land-use factors associated with variation in local recruitment.
