Contemporary models of forest nutrient cycles depict strong interactions among lithology (bedrock), soils, and plants. However, there is still much to learn about how lithology affects nutrient availability in soils. Lithology can affect the nutrient cycles that connect soil and biota by directly providing soil nutrients via weathering (both nutrient concentration and rate of release). Using a suite of leaf and soil measurements, the flow of nutrients between_sandstone_lithology and shale_lithology_was_compared.
