The Center for Movement Science and Technology integrates the neural, biomechanical, cognitive, and clinical sciences for the study of action.
The major goals of the Center for Motor Control are to:
- Prepare new generations of highly qualified scientists
- Facilitate cutting-edge research focused on understanding human motor control and coordination, deficits in motor function, and recovery of function in patients with neurological and orthopedic impairment
- Facilitate bidirectional translational interactions between our colleagues at the Medical School and on the University Park Campus
Penn State has been a leader in interdisciplinary research on Movement Science and Technology for decades. While a large group of scientists in this area have been centered in the department of kinesiology, related research has been expanding across a variety of Colleges and Departments, including psychology, engineering, orthopedics, neurology, and physical medicine and rehabilitation. C-MOST consolidates these efforts into a single structure, with the goal of facilitating interdisciplinary and translational research focused on understanding the neural, cognitive, and biomechanical mechanisms that underlie biological movement processes and how they are affected by neurological and orthopedic damage, as well as how to best facilitate recovery of function when damage occurs.
