Webinar Alert: Where Did COVID-19 Come From?

The virus that causes COVID-19 disrupted nearly every facet of life for people around the world. The best way to ensure we are prepared for the next pandemic is to understand where the current one started, but that question has become bogged down in geopolitics and conspiracy theories.

Fact Check: The Facts – and Gaps – on the Origin of the Coronavirus

A year and a half into the COVID-19 pandemic — and with a death toll approaching 4 million lives — how the coronavirus came to spark a global scourge remains unknown. Was it the result of a spillover from an animal to a human, as has happened repeatedly in the past? Or did the virus accidentally escape from a nearby lab in Wuhan?

The science around the lab leak theory hasn't changed. But here's why some scientists have.

Five virologists said few conclusions can be drawn based on the available scientific evidence, but they noted that the context and circumstances of the debate have changed.

‘It was just a matter of time’ until coronavirus variant arrived in Centre County amid rising cases

A little over one year after the first coronavirus case was reported in Centre County, a more infectious variant has arrived in the Centre region. The B.1.1.7 variant, also referred to as the United Kingdom variant, was first discovered at Penn State in tested wastewater samples and was confirmed in a “COVID-19 Status Update” with university officials and community leaders on March 26.

Origins of an outbreak

It was late January 2020 when Maciej Boni realized that the COVID-19 pandemic was about to take over his life. Boni, associate professor of biology, is an epidemiologist with extensive expertise in viral evolution, including a recent focus on human and avian flu. When COVID-19 hit, he tapped into a network of colleagues around the world, quickly joining an international team intent on tracking the outbreak to its origins.

The Search for Animals That Could Carry the Next Deadly Virus

Scientists are finding new ways to predict which animals we should be most worried about

Interview with Dr. Maciej Boni

Where did COVID-19 come from?

The coronavirus that conquered the world came from a thumb-sized bat tucked inside a remote Chinese cave. Of this much, scientists are convinced.

Her State’s in a COVID Death Spiral. Biden Just Hired Her.

Rhode Island Gov. and Commerce Secretary nominee Gina Raimondo was praised early in the pandemic. Then things went off the rails.

Are we at the beginning of the end of COVID-19? The tricky road to herd immunity, explained.

One year into a changed world, the numbers defy comprehension. More than 21 million confirmed cases of COVID-19 in the United States — a rate approaching one in 15 people — plus untold millions who had mild or no symptoms and were never identified.
