Kudos: Brian Dawson Keeps It All Flowing

Research Associate Brian Dawson
Research Associate Brian Dawson

Congratulations to Brian Dawson, this month’s recipient of the Huck staff Kudos award. Brian is a research associate in the Huck’s Flow Cytometry Core Facility, where he’s worked since 2015. The son of two Penn State alumni, Brian also received his degree here – a B.S. in Animal Sciences in 2010.

The Flow Cytometry Facility is equipped with flow cytometers and cell sorters that enable researchers to examine cell samples within the range of the micron. As a key member of the facility's research staff, Brian engages in experimentation, training, project collaboration, and consultation. This includes training customers in experimental design, sample preparation, and the use of equipment, as well as providing guidance in the interpretation of results.

“Brian is a great asset to the Huck Institutes,” said Brian’s supervisor, Sarah Neering, the director of the facility. “He is the sole operator of the MoFlo Astrios cell sorter, and is a very dependable and conscientious person.”

This fall, when the Huck’s centrifuge was in need of someone to provide training and maintenance, Brian came forward to take care of it. Additionally, he is currently learning about tissue culture techniques in order to assist the director of another Huck unit with the proposed startup of a mammalian cell culture facility. Brian also assists in teaching a graduate-level Flow Cytometry course in the spring semester.

“Kudos to Brian Dawson for stepping up to help with the training and oversight of the second-floor MSC centrifuge room,” said one colleague. “His willingness to be a team player is much appreciated.”

“Kudos to Brian Dawson for being so helpful and willing to take over,” submitted another. “Thank you!!”

“Brian is always open to learning new techniques and procedures,” noted Neering. “I can always rely on him to lend a helping hand without any hesitation. Basically, Brian is a pleasure to have working with me!”

The Huck Kudos program is designed to recognize these kinds of outstanding staff efforts, awarding the recipients with an extra day off work. Each month, kudos are collected from anyone in the Huck who wants to recognize a staff member going above and beyond the call of duty.
