Nineteenth century descriptions and photographs of mixed conifer forests in California consistently depict open, park-like landscapes with trees in small groups. A century of fire suppression has made it difficult to determine the ways in which fire generated conditions that maintained this structure. Characterization of forest spatial structure can provide insight into the processes that created the pattern._ The goal of this project will be to quantify pre-suppression regeneration patterns of trees in an old-growth mixed conifer forest for which a detailed fire history has been previously developed._
