María C. Serrano got her PhD in Biology by the Universidad Complutense de Madrid (Spain) in 2006, with an honorary award. She has been a postdoctoral researcher in scientific institutions of high recognition such as Universidad Complutense de Madrid (Spain), Northwestern University (USA), the Spanish National Research Council (CSIC; Spain), and the National Hospital for Paraplegics (Spain), in all cases granted with highly prestigious and competitive fellowships from the Spanish Government (2008-2017). Since 2017, she is a tenured-track researcher at the Institute of Materials Science in Madrid (CSIC), where she integrates the Group of Materials for Medicine and Biotechnology leading her own research lines with focus on biomaterials and tissue engineering. In the past 10 years, her work has been mainly focused in the development of novel biomaterials for neural repair at the injured spinal cord. She has been principal investigator of 7 research projects, granted with over M€ 2 of funding. Since 2023, she is the coordinator of an European consortium of researchers funded by the Horizon Europe PathFinder Programme with a budget of M€ 3.5 to develop novel therapeutics for spinal cord injury.
