Please join us in congratulating Maridel A. Fredericksen,Yizhe Zhang, Missy L. Hazen, Raquel G. Loreto, Colleen A. Mangold, Danny Z. Chen, and David Hughes.Their article has been selected by the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (PNAS) as one of six to receive the prestigious Cozzarelli Prize for 2017. Their paper, titled “Three- dimensional visualization and a deep-learning model reveal complex fungal parasite networks in behaviorally manipulated ants,” characterized fungal parasites at a nanometer scale resolution using cutting edge microscopy facilities at the Huck Institutes and machine learning tools. The team showed how fungal parasites control host behavior in “zombie ants." These findings alter the current views of host-parasite relations as they suggest the fungus doesn’t necessarily need to invade the host’s brain in order to control the ant. A formal award will be presented on April 29 in Washington DC.
