2026-2031 Strategic Plan

The Huck Institutes of the Life Sciences’ Penn State Neuroscience Institute (PSNI) will continue its growth as a nationally recognized hub of interdisciplinary neuroscience, integrating fundamental, translational, and clinical research to improve brain-related animal and human health across the lifespan. Drawing inspiration from leading peer institutes, PSNI will aim to build a unified and unique scientific community with the infrastructure, visibility, and collaborative energy required to tackle society’s most complex brain-related challenges.

Our 2026-2031 strategic plan was developed by the PSNI University Park steering committee, with input from faculty across The Eberly College of Science, The College of Health and Human Development, The College of Engineering, The College of the Liberal Arts, The College of Agricultural Sciences, and The College of Medicine.

Goal 1: Build interdisciplinary research excellence through establishment of thematic research pillars

Establish PSNI as a national leader in cross-disciplinary neuroscience by developing four flagship research pillars:

  • environmental and behavioral neuroscience
  • brain development and aging
  • neuroplasticity, mental health, and addiction
  • neural engineering, biodevices, and AI

Goal 2: Accelerate student success and workforce development

Expand PSNI’s footprint as a training engine for Pennsylvania and the nation

  • PSNI support for undergraduate neuroscience research
  • Graduate training innovation
  • Grow postdoctoral training opportunities
  • Expand industry partnerships & experiential learning

Goal 3: Build a nationally recognized Institute and strengthen external partnerships

Position PSNI as a top-tier neuroscience institute through scientific excellence partnerships, and philanthropy

  • Strengthen PSNI’s identity and reputation as a leading neuroscience institute
  • Expand our External Scientific Advisory Board
  • Coordinate key milestone anniversary events and increase externally-focused events
  • Engage in greater coordination with the University around philanthropy

Goal 4: Increase synergy and collaboration across fundamental and clinical neuroscience with PSNI units at University Park, The College of Medicine, and Commonwealth campuses

Engage in coordinated joint University Park and College of Medicine neuroscience efforts
