Microbes in Action: Decoding Their Chemistry with Metabolomics
Metabolomics Workshop with Dr. Ipsita Mohanty

  April 10, 2026 @ 01:00 pm to 03:00 pm

  AVBS 106
  University Park

This workshop will introduce participants to the application of untargeted LC-MS/MS metabolomics in microbiome research. Participants will gain hands-on experience exploring LC-MS/MS metabolomics data and identifying microbiome-derived metabolites using community platforms such as GNPS2. The session will combine conceptual overviews with guided analysis of real-world datasets, focusing on how metabolites such as bile acids, acyl lipids etc can be used to understand microbiome activity in health and disease. Participants with no prior experience in metabolomics are encouraged to attend. No coding experience is required.

Participants should:

  • Bring a laptop with Wi-Fi access
  • Create an account on GNPS2 prior to the workshop (details will be shared with registered participants, limited access tokens will be available on spot)

No additional software installation is required. Registration is required in advance.

Dr. Mohanty is an Assistant Professor at Penn State University in the Departments of Veterinary & Biomedical Sciences and Nutritional Sciences. Her research focuses on computational metabolomics and host-microbiome interactions, with an emphasis on discovering and annotating microbiome-derived metabolites such as bile acids using large-scale LC-MS/MS data and repository-scale mining.
