Mission: The Center of Excellence in Industrial Biotechnology will serve as the focal point for Penn State’s educational, research, and outreach initiatives in industrial biotechnology, coordinating activities across the campus (including both the Shared Fermentation Facility and various academic units) while ensuring that these efforts effectively address the needs and interests of our students, faculty, and the biotechnology industry.
Vision: Penn State will be recognized as one of the premier academic institutions in industrial biotechnology through its distinguished academic programs, pioneering research, and targeted continuing education programs that support the growth and development of industrial biotechnology including biopharmaceutical manufacturing, sustainable bio-production of chemicals and fuels, and food biotechnology.
I'm a senior studying biological engineering, with a focus on the food and biological processing option. I worked in the CSL Behring Fermentation Facility this summer. I learned about the upstream and downstream processes involved in fermentation. I gained experience with state-of-the-art equipment used in advanced labs in the industry. The amazing thing about this facility is that it has the ability to scale up fermentation processes, from as small as a shake flask to a volume of 300 liters.
