2013 Techniques in molecular biology: laboratory workshop

The following topics will be covered, hands-on, in the workshop: Purifying nucleic acids Analyzing DNA by restriction enzymes Gel electrophoresis Southern and northern hybridizations Generating nucleic acid probes Cloning and screening for desired clones DNA sequencing PCR amplification Protein analysis by western blotting This two-week intensive laboratory workshop is supplemented with lectures and discussions on the basic concepts and principles behind the techniques, their applications, current developments, and related techniques. The workshop will run from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM each day, from June 3-14, 2013. No previous laboratory experience is necessary. Cost Cost is $750 for Penn State participants, and $1,500 for others (high school teachers should contact Loida Escote-Carlson for more cost-related information). Please note that the fee is for the workshop only; accommodations and other travel-related expenses are not included. Registration Space is very limited, and admission will be granted on a first-come-first-served basis. Please note that faculty and staff will receive priority over University Park graduate students, who are advised instead to take the regular graduate-level course IBIOS 593, offered each semester.
