Vaccination is among the most successful and cost-effective public health interventions. A recent analysis estimated that the WHO’s Expanded Program on Immunization has prevented 153 million deaths over 50 years. To arrive at this number requires estimating three challenging quantities:
- the coverage of vaccination,
- the burden of disease that occurred, and
- the burden of disease that would have occurred in the absence of vaccination.
Matt Ferrari, Professor of Biology and CIDD Director, will present examples of work he has developed over the last 20 years to estimate each of these quantities in the context of measles and rubella.
