Abstract:
This lecture examines how advancing bioinoculants requires a shift from reductionist, product-based approaches toward a systems-level understanding of plant-microbe-soil interactions. Drawing on principles from microbial ecology, rhizosphere biology, and plant nutrition, it explores how microbial communities regulate nutrient acquisition under variable and often limiting environmental conditions, with particular emphasis on context dependency and predictability. The lecture will also introduce the "Bioinoculant Research Network", highlighting its role in fostering interdisciplinary collaboration and bridging fundamental research with translational outcomes. By integrating ecological theory with applied frameworks, the talk will outline how microbiome insights can be transformed into actionable strategies for agriculture. It will conclude by presenting emerging research directions and project ideas aimed at advancing the design, evaluation, and deployment of next-generation bioinoculants.

About the Speaker:
Maria Julia de Lima Brossi is an Assistant Research Professor in the Department of Plant Science. Her research focuses on microbial-mediated plant nutrition and the processes governing plant-microbe interactions, integrating microbiology, microbial ecology, and rhizosphere biology to elucidate how microbial communities regulate nutrient acquisition under nutrient-limited and stress-prone conditions. A central theme of her work is advancing the field beyond descriptive microbiome studies toward predictive and actionable frameworks that can inform agricultural management. She leads the interdisciplinary "Bioinoculant Research Network", which aims to advance the field by integrating fundamental science with applied approaches to support the effective use of bioinoculants in agricultural systems.
