Abstract: The field of structural molecular biology has been thriving for a long time, with some important recent breakthroughs, including the success of the computer program AlphaFold in predicting protein structure from amino-acid sequence, and the ability to produce atomic-resolution structures from cryo-Electron Microscopy. The talk will begin with a few general remarks on this topic. I shall then present a representation that captures the essentials of a protein folding pattern as a matrix. This representation allows quick testing of a novel structure (or prediction) against the database of structures, to identify other proteins with similar folding patterns.
