The Cyr lab is interested in understanding the mechanisms that control microtubule organization in plant cells. Unlike animal cells, plant cells do not have a centrosomal microtubule organizing center, so we would like to uncover the alternative strategies plants use to generate organized microtubule arrays. In particular we are focusing on whether anastral mitotic spindles are organized at the equator, and the role of kinesins in organizing the plant mitotic spindle at the midzone. We are also examining how cell plane determination affects the organization of shoot apical meristem.
