Bioinformatics and Genomics Degree Requirements

Criteria that students need to meet for the Bioinformatics and Genomics graduate program.

Overview

The main objectives of the program are:

  • To provide student with comprehensive training in the use and development of advanced computational and statistical techniques needed to collect, process, analyze integrate, and interpret large and complex 'omics' data

  • To provide students with an in-depth understanding of the use of these techniques for addressing basic and applied research questions in the life sciences, and with the skills to communicate within interdisciplinary work teams, as well as to a broad target audience

  • To enhance the collaborative environment and to facilitate productive interactions and creative efforts in 'omics' research at Penn State.

To be awarded a PhD, a student must successfully complete:

  • Required Courses: Courses in bioinformatics, genomics, statistics and molecular evolution. Additionally students will attend courses in colloquium, critical analysis and ethics (17 credits).

  • Elective Courses: Advanced courses from diverse areas (18 credits).

  • Rotations: Students will participate in three lab rotations, 8 weeks duration ech, before selecting the doctoral advisor(s).

  • Candidacy Examination: Administered at the end of the first year includes a written report and an oral examination of candidate’s knowledge of bioinformatics and genomics research gained over the first year.

  • Teaching Requirement:  Students are required to complete one-semester of teaching in a selected course.

  • Comprehensive Examination: Administered generally before the start of the third year consists of student’s dissertation proposal and an oral presentation.

  • Dissertation Defense: Submission of a written dissertation, and its defense before the dissertation committee, are the program’s final requirements. 

Options

Students may pursue doctoral program with no options or select an available option.
