Comparative genomics, bioinformatics, molecular evolution. Specific interest areas include:
- Origin and diversification of flowers and developmental pathways, especially as they are influenced by gene and genome duplication
- Comparative genomics of angiosperms and plant gene families
- Biology of parasitic plants; including chloroplast genome evolution in nonphotosynthetic organisms, genomics of haustorium invasion, and the evolution of parasite-host relationships
