Frequently-asked questions
Answers to questions people often ask of the Proteomics and Mass Spectrometry Facility.
Can I submit radioactive samples for analysis?
Unfortunately, the facility is not equipped to analyze radioactive samples.
How do I submit a gel for tryptic in-gel digestion?
Please follow this sample preparation protocol.
Can I get trained to use instruments by myself?
At the moment we can train you on using the MALDI instrument for your research. We will show you how to prepare your sample and how to set up the instrument for analysis.
We have an open access LC/MS instrument in 536 Chemistry Building, which will be available for students to use in the near future. As soon as the set up of the instrument is completed we will start training students on it.
What do you cover in your 2D-gel electrophoresis workshop?
The 2D-gel electrophoresis workshop runs for one week. You will prepare your protein sample for the 1 and 2 gel electrophoresis and run both dimensions. We will provide a sample, but you are welcome to bring a sample which is relevant to your research. You will scan your gel using our densitometer and pick spots of interest with our spot picker.
The spots will be digested with trypsin and the resulting digests will be analyzed by MALDI and LC-MS/MS. You will get a CD containing all tutorials, your 2-D gel pictures and the results of your databank searches.
How do I sign up for the 2D-gel electrophoresis workshop?
You can send an email to the facility’s email address ms@huck.psu.edu expressing your interest in the workshop. As soon as we have a group of 6 interested people we will hold the workshop.
