DNA extraction and storage
The Nucleic Acid Facility uses established protocols for extraction and storage of DNA.
The Nucleic Acid Facility was approached by Health and Human Development researchers about storing subjects' DNA for future testing. Therefore, we have adopted extraction and storage protocols from the Institute of Psychiatry in London. We have also adopted their LIMS system to track samples through all stages of purification, storage and testing.

Examples
- Researchers are using swabs to collect cheek cells from subjects. The swabs are placed in tubes with a lysis buffer containing salts, detergent and proteinase K. This solution lyses the cells and stabilizes the DNA until it can be purified. The tubes containing the swabs are then mailed to us at the Nucleic Acid Facility, where we extract and store the DNA at -80°C for future testing.
