What light microscopic equipment is available at the Electron Microscopy Facility?
Lots! Light microscopes; dissecting microscopes with camera adaptor, video adaptor and printer; sample processing equipment for histology and histochemistry; microtomes; automatic coverslipper.
We have an Olympus BX50 light microscope fitted with a SPOT II RT camera, 2 Olympus SZ dissecting microscopes with adaptor for a Sony CCD-TV camera/PVM 1390 video monitor and UP1200A video printer, an Olympus DP10 digital camera, and several educational bright field microscopes.
The lab also holds a complete set of automated sample processing equipment for histology and histochemistry at light microscopy level. The process includes fixation, dehydration, infiltration with and embedding in paraffin, and finally sectioning and staining the slides. The dehydration and infiltration steps can be done automatically in our Citadel Paraffin Processor. The duration of these dehydration and infiltration steps are about 8-22 hours in total, depending on the types of tissue.
The Facility has two microtomes for paraffin sectioning, a Finesse and a Leica paraffin microtome. Thin sections are placed on glass slides, which then may be stained for H&E with a Shandon Gemini Autostainer.
All our equipment can be programmed for specific use with individual protocols.
