PhD degree checklist
For Hershey-based Genetics students. Note: The responsibility for meeting all time schedule requirements for the PhD degree rests with the student.

- Candidacy Evaluation Examination (within three semesters after enrollment in the Ph.D. program).
- Appointment of Ph.D. Advisory Committee by the Dean of the Graduate School following recommendation by the Program Chair. [Immediately following candidacy examination and upon recommendation of advisor]
- Development and approval of proposed courses of study with advisory committee (by end of second semester).
- Obtain copy of Manual for Graduate Students and Thesis Information Bulletin Manual for Graduate Students and Thesis Information Bulletin from Graduate School.
- Completed communication requirements (prior to comprehensive examination).
- Comprehensive examination (at least 3 months prior to final examination) arranged through Program Chair and Dean of the Graduate School.
- First draft of thesis submitted to major advisor (at least 11 weeks before the delivery date to the Graduate School).
- Copies of thesis including abstract (600 words maximum) and vitae (one page maximum) in approved Graduate School form to all members of committee (at least 7 weeks in advance of delivery date to Graduate School).
- Reviewed thesis returned to graduate student for correction (at least 5 weeks before the delivery date to the Graduate School).
- Review of thesis and final examination (at least 3 weeks in advance of delivery date to the Graduate School).
- Acceptance of thesis by Advisory Committee.
- Review of thesis by Program Chair (allow 1 week for review).
- Submit thesis to Graduate School.
- Acceptance of thesis by Graduate School.
