MD/PhD degree checklist

For Hershey-based Genetics students. Note: The responsibility for meeting all time schedule requirements for the PhD degree rests with the student.

  1. Admitted to Graduate School:_______________________(Date)
  2. Advisor:______________________________
  3. United States Medical License Exam Step 1 (after year 2).
  4. Appointment of PhD Advisory Committee by the Dean of the Graduate School following recommendation by the Program Chair. [Immediately following USMLE Step 1 and upon recommendation of advisor]
  5. Completion of required basic science graduate courses.
  6. Obtain copy of Manual for Graduate Students and Thesis Information Bulletin from Graduate School.
  7. Completed communication requirements (prior to comprehensive examination).
  8. Comprehensive examination (at least 3 months prior to final examination) arranged through Program Chair and Dean of the Graduate School.
  9. First draft of thesis submitted to major advisor (at least 11 weeks before the delivery date to the Graduate School).
  10. Copies of thesis including abstract (600 words maximum) and vitae (one page maximum) in approved Graduate School form to all members of committee (at least 7 weeks in advance of delivery date to Graduate School).
  11. Reviewed thesis returned to graduate student for correction (at least 5 weeks before the delivery date to the Graduate School).
  12. Review of thesis and final examination (at least 3 weeks in advance of delivery date to the Graduate School).
  13. Acceptance of thesis by Advisory Committee.
  14. Review of thesis by Program Chair (allow 1 week for review).
  15. Submit thesis to Graduate School.
  16. Acceptance of thesis by Graduate School.
  17. Completion of Medical School requirements (Clerkship training).
