Examinations
MD/PhD students in Genetics need to take a candidacy exam, a comprehensive exam and a final oral exam.
Candidacy exam
At the end of the second year of the program, all combined degree students will take the United States Medical Licensing Exam (USMLE) Step 1, which is required for graduation from medical school. The successful completion of this examination and satisfactory performance (B average minimum) on all graduate course work performed during year one and two will be accepted by the Genetics program as equivalent to passing the standard PhD Candidacy Examination that is taken by the first-year graduate students in the Genetics program.
Comprehensive exam
For the MD/PhD student the requirements for the comprehensive exam are the same as for the PhD student, although generally the MD/PhD student takes the comprehensive exam after year three instead of year two.
Final oral examination
The final oral examination for the MD/PhD candidate will occur after all other graduate requirements have been met and upon recommendation of the thesis advisor. The requirements and format are the same as for the PhD candidate.
