Do I need to identify a specific faculty member as an advisor before I apply?

This depends on the program. Many programs require or allow students to undertake rotations in different labs before selecting an advisor or advisors. However, you are encouraged to contact faculty members before applying, to explore possible research opportunities.

Most programs do require not you to identify an advisor before applying. Instead, you will typically have the opportunity to spend time in two or more labs before selecting an advisor or advisors (some programs allow you to have dual mentors).

However, if you are applying for a research degree you are encouraged to find out about specific faculty members with whom you share research interests, and to contact them before applying. This is the case for all the degree programs listed on this website, with the exception of the Master of Biotechnology.

Each PhD-granting program listed on this website lists faculty associated with the program, together with a brief summary of their research interests. If you click on the person's name in the relevant list, you will be taken to more detailed information about him/her. Faculty come from many different departments, colleges and campuses. You will typically be based in your advisor's department, and have access to the facilities and resources it makes available.

Additionally, each program has a specific set of administrative staff and program chair(s) who can be contacted with queries about the program and identifying possible advisor(s).
