One-day workshop on how to obtain thin sections for imaging samples with TEM, SEM, AFM and other types of microscopy. Covers basic techniques, and correction of common mistakes. Presentations (open to all) and hands-on sessions (space limited). Refreshments will be served.

Ultramicrotomy enables you to obtain thin sections suitable for imaging biological and non-biological samples with TEM, SEM, AFM, and other types of microscopy. It is a very tricky technique which needs a great deal of effort to master.
The workshop aims to teach the basic technique as well as tips/tricks and correction of most common mistakes.

Open to everyone. No fee.
Demonstrations and hands-on in small groups, 10:30am-5:30pm, 1 South Frear Lab
Includes:
- tool making (wire loops and hair probes)
- Glass knife making and evaluation of glass knives
- Care and cleaning of diamond knives
- Operation of the ultramicrotome
- Semi-thin and thin sectioning
- Grid selection
- Section collection
