A two-week intensive laboratory workshop supplemented with lectures and discussions. No previous laboratory experience necessary. Space is limited, so apply early.
Workshop overview
Hands-on experience with the basic techniques in molecular biology, including:
- Purifying DNA and analyzing DNA by restriction enzymes
- Gel electrophoresis and nucleic acid hybridization
- Generating nucleic acid probes
- Cloning and screening for desired clones
- DNA sequencing and PCR amplification
- Protein analysis by western blotting.
This two-week intensive laboratory workshop is supplemented with lectures and discussions on:
- The basic principles behind the techniques
- Applications of techniques
- Current developments
- Related techniques
Cost
- Penn State participants: $650
- Participants not at Penn State: $1200
These fees are for the workshop only. Accommodations, travel and other expenses are not included.

Admission is on a first-come-first-served basis.
Note: Faculty and staff get priority over graduate students based at the University Park campus (who are advised instead to take the regular graduate student course, IBIOS 593, offered every semester).
