Song learning, like speech acquisition, takes place during early lifeand has effects that last the entire lifetime of the individual.Birds that are kept isolated during song development develop abnormalisolate song. In this talk I will present evidence for motor andsensory changes that take place during developmental song learning. In addition to behavioral changes, we measure fMRI BOLD responses tosong playbacks in birds that allowed to learn a song versus birdsthat were kept isolated during song development, and versus female, who do not learn their song. I will then show evidence formulti-generation transition (without external input) from isolatesongs into normal songs.
