Beth Shapiro receives MacArthur Fellow award

Beth Shapiro, assistant professor of biology, was one of 24 individuals selected by the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation to receive the 2009 MacArthur Fellow award. MacArthur Fellows receive a $500,000 grant without stipulations or reporting requirements.
MacArthur Fellow awards are given to talented individuals in any discipline who have shown extraordinary originality and dedication to their field. The three criteria for the award are:
- exceptional creativity
- promise for important future advances based on a proven track record of accomplishments
- potential for the fellowship to facilitate subsequent creative work
