Fedoroff receives National Medal of Science

Nina V. Fedoroff, who directed the Huck Institutes from its inception in the mid 1990s until 2002, is one of eight scientists named by President George W. Bush to receive the 2006 Medal of Science (presented in July 2007). This award honors scientists for pioneering research, enhancing understanding of the world and leading to innovations and technologies that give the United States a global economic edge. Author of "Mendel in the Kitchen: A Scientist's View of Genetically Modified Foods" (2004), Fedoroff is internationally renowned for her work in plant molecular biology and genetics. She is a faculty member in various graduate programs supported by the Huck Institutes, including Plant Biology.

Dr Fedoroff has also been named as the Science and Technology Advisor to the US Secretary of State, Condoleezza Rice. She begins a 3-year term in the job in August 2007, while on leave from Penn State. She is the third person to hold the post since it was established in 2000.
